Its largest fund-raiser is the Christmas Truce Ball held annually in December. Other equipment, such as tents and uniforms, have been purchased for the group through its fund-raising activities. Most of the vehicles used during reenactments are privately owned and loaned to Company B for reenactments.
“We get a lot of father-son pairs,” Cassler explained, where the son joins and then the father gets involved because he sees how much fun it is. The Fifth Rangers group has 15 or more adult volunteers and a youth membership of about 50, one of the largest Scouting groups in the area, Cassler said.
The encampment is free and open to the public.
The members will display WWII-era vehicles and give demonstrations of period radio communications and field medicine. at the invitation of the Jackson Township Historical Society. The reenactment group will be camped on the grounds of Jackson Center School (7756 Fulton NW, Jackson Township) on July 9 from 9 a.m. Cassler noted that there are reenactment groups for women, (including the 1st Women’s Army Corps Living History Group ). The Fifth Rangers Company B is open only to young men because the reenactment group strives to be historically accurate. Venturing is a hobby-based, coeducational Scout activity open to youths ages 14 to 20. Cassler considers the group as a way to honor the memory of his father and all WWII veterans and to help to preserve the history of that crucial time in US history.
Drawing upon his own experience as a WWII reenactor, he founded the reenactment group Venturing Crew 1944, the Fifth Rangers Company B in 2018. Jim Cassler is the son of a World War II veteran, a long-time Boy Scout leader, and a lover of history.
